The Vista Boutique: Two Decades of Deals That Make a Difference
Run by the Vista V’s Auxiliary, the volunteer-powered shop has raised more than $320,000 to support New Vista residents
Tucked inside New Vista Society is a little shop with a big impact.
The Vista Boutique has been part of the community since 2004, offering everyday essentials, sweet treats, and unique finds — all while raising funds to enhance the lives of residents and tenants.
“We have great bargains here,” says long-time volunteer Dianne Olsen, one of several Vista V’s members who help keep the store running smoothly. “Everything is very reasonably priced.”
The Boutique’s shelves are stocked with a mix of new and gently used items — from shampoo and toothpaste to women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry, household décor, and more. Visitors can also find favourite snacks, cold pop, and ice-cream treats, making it a cheerful stop for residents and guests alike.
The shop is staffed entirely by volunteers from the Vista V’s Auxiliary and relies on donations from friends, family members, visitors, and staff. Since opening its doors, the group has contributed more than $320,000 to New Vista Society — funds used to purchase equipment and comforts that improve residents’ quality of life.
For volunteers like Dianne, it’s about more than just the store.
Her connection to New Vista runs deep — her father was an early supporter of the society, and after retiring from a 34-year government career, she began volunteering at the Vista Boutique.
“When I retired from the government, my dad asked me if I would consider doing some volunteering here,” she recalls. “I thought I’d do it for a year or two — and it’s 20 years later.”
Over the years, Dianne has seen countless moments of joy inside the Boutique — especially when residents discover something familiar among the shelves.
“I just love it when one of the residents come in and they see things that remind them of stuff they had in their home,” she says. “It’s very rewarding to know that they enjoy themselves — and to know that the money we’re making goes towards assisting people and making their day a little bit brighter.”
After two decades of service, Dianne still looks forward to every shift.
“I just enjoy every time I come in here,” she says. “It’s a pleasant place to be for everybody.”
